Data is getting pretty big, and with that bigness come big challenges to unearth big and small insights. HR leaders need to distill and interpret their big data to identify big, macro trends in their workforces and to zero in on the small data points hidden amid the sea of Big Data, but that make no sense without that backdrop of the Big Data. Several levels of Big Data, in fact, help us to sort through, understand and interpret data big and small—and how it all fits into the big world of people management.
#HRTechChat Welcomes Guest Host ADP
HRO Today and TMT welcome ADP to guest host #HRTechChat Episode Thirty-Five. Leading the charge for ADP’s tweeting team this Friday, Oct. 12, at 2pm ET / 11am PT will be Robert Mattson (@RMattsonADP), director of marketing for ADP’s Talent Management division. Many of his colleagues are sure to join us, too. We hope to see you there. In the meantime, you can read his excellent take on the big, big potential of Big Data in the TMT Spotlight, and you can read on for the rest of the #HRTechChat preview. ...
The 360 Degrees of Big Data
Big Data, as Mattson notes, “has been the buzz phrase…in 2012.” The enormity of business intelligence data out there, in the ether, holds the promise of 360-degree clarity in business fundamentals and strategy for anyone who can unlock, distill and interpret data in the raw. The potential benefits to human resource leaders who figure it out are profound. Theirs will be a competitive advantage not easily matched, let alone surpassed. Who’s there? Who’s achieved this objective? Nobody yet, really, and therein resides a big reason why we’re chatting Big Data with ADP for #HRTechChat.
The Three Levels of Big Data
Yes, HR leaders could use some direction, some wise advice, in approaching and crunching all this data. And they need technology that can help them do so on many levels. As Mattson points out, Big Data relevant to HR comes in, specifically, three levels: Big, Bigger and Biggest. We’re having a conversation this week around the weight and pertinence these delineations carry, and the applicability they provide. For a smart elaboration on those levels of Big Data, you can read Mattson’s TMT Spotlight here. Following is the short version, excerpted and paraphrased:
- Big Data: All the HR related data that is available regarding past and present employees
- Bigger Data: A collection of more than one organization’s Big Data, an aggregate benchmark for analysis
- Biggest Data: All the Big Data available that can help answer questions beyond the scope of HR and into the realm of traditional business
Big Data and the Path to Alignment
That last and highest level seems especially exciting. For a while now, #HRTechChat’s lead co-host, Brent Skinner (@brentskinner), has been blogging here on a theme near and dear to many HR leaders’ hearts: alignment of their function with other business functions. It’s a goal that will give them bigger seats at the table of overall organizational strategy, and tapping the secrets hiding in Big Data may very well be the path to alignment—which is why, again, we are so pleased to have ADP tweeting with us this week.
