Highlighting the evolution of HR and Talent Management Technology as it moves online and adds productivity and transparency to the hiring life cycle.
I have a nephew who is an exceptional programmer. He was just recruited from a major US corporation to a French organization looking to expand in the enormous American marketplace. This rather normal process (in the middle of our downturn) reminded me of three things relevant to the Onrec community. First, it was another clear example of how we truly compete globally now for talent. Second, it illustrated the gains we have made. The online tools that were used to create this transaction added productivity (increased speed and lowered costs) into the recruiting process. Third and finally, this all took place in one of the worst economic downturns in decades, and yet one company gained (and one lost) vital talent.
That's right, the "War for Talent" continues. Sure, it takes place in the midst of outplacement headlines, but long-term oriented companies realize that this temporary downturn is an ideal opportunity to upgrade the team. As professionals engaged in utilizing online tools to support this activity, the message is doubly encouraging -- we are adding productivity into the process (increasing speed and lowering costs). What company doesn't want to improve a vital business function, and isn't the contracting part of the business cycle a perfect time to do it? This way, when the economy turns (and it will), organizations will be perfectly positioned to seize market share while their competition is just pulling their heads out of the sand.
One last thing: As a rapidly evolving global profession, it is important that we gather together face to face at least once a year. At Onrec, we've been building what will surely be the "must attend" event of 2009. The Expo is strategically placed at the end of the year in November when we will all hopefully be seeing the early stages of a recovery in the United States. The event will take place in a very central and convenient location, Chicago. Check out the incredible line-up of speakers and topics we have already announced, and keep the dates of Nov 3-4 reserved. More information is available at: www.Onrec.com/expo2009

Wow -- what a month in history! Sure, we are all hopeful and excited about our new President, but being a technology junkie, I can't help but get excited about how the web is adding productivity to Democracy.
While Obama was being sworn in, millions of people from around the world were watching online while communicating with their friends and colleagues on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and thousands of other online methods. Many will suggest that this election was so brilliantly run online, that it was one of the success factors helping to elect our new leader. In addition, on the new www.Whitehouse.gov site it says: "President Obama is committed to creating the most open and accessible administration in American history," and the site invites Americans to add their voice to the future progress.
Our industry, online recruiting, in many ways helped pave the way for this progress. Online recruiting was one of the first viable business applications on the Internet, and it has created millions of jobs worldwide, while it has helped add productivity, speed and transparency to a major business function (finding talent). We are at the very early stages, and our team at Onrec is here to help keep you up to date with the rapid pace of change and evolution. In fact, later this year, we will be launching the first-ever look at the online recruiting industry: from inception, to the current state of the industry, to a glimpse of the future opportunities. If you would like to contribute your voice to this watershed report forever memorializing our industry, please touch base.
In addition, we are hard at work assembling an incredible Onrec Expo 2009. Our theme will continue as "The Only Global Gathering of Online Recruiting Leaders and Game Changing Recruiting Technologies." Our speaker and topic line-up is already very impressive, and we will continue to make announcements. Definitely, if you plan to attend any one industry event this year, reserve November 3-4, 2009 on your calendar, and plan to be in Chicago for the event of the year:
